| When I first began my studies in Italy to become a professional sommelier, my instructors frequently spoke of il matrimonio d'amore, marriage for love, when
referring to the pairing of wine with food. I soon learned that they were using the phrase to describe those occasions when wine and food are matched so harmoniously that it is like when two people are together because of true love rather than for money, prestige, or convenience. I also learned that, as in the real world, true love comes along all too infrequently in the world of wine. My task as a sommelier is to assist our guests as they search for this state of perfect bliss.
I am very grateful for this opportunity to be a part of the San Francisco community, having arrived in March 2002 from Florence, Italy. You have a beautiful city, wonderful people, and amazing possibilities for food and wine. It is both exciting and challenging for me to be here living and working among you. In our house, Incanto, we are pleased to present a cellar that celebrates the breadth and depth of Italy's recent rebirth in world-class winemaking. From Piedmont and Tuscany, to Sicily, Sardinia, Campania, Friuli, and Trentino, from strict traditionalists to innovative modernists, we explore the very best that Italy's diverse regions and winemakers have to offer. Above all, we seek the elusive matrimonio d'amore. Whether it
is a quick glass of wine and small snack in our wine bar or a few bottles over a four-course meal with friends in our dining room, I look forward to the occasion to serve you.
